1984 - Troops storm Golden Temple - Sikhs' most holy shrine - to flush out Sikh militants pressing for self-rule.
1984 - Indira Gandhi assassinated by Sikh bodyguards, following which her son, Rajiv, takes over.

Poltical life
She started in politics in a very young age her father was in politics and Indira wrote to her father to discuss about new ideas. Form 1959 to 1960 she ran for President of the Indian National Congress and won. While she was in the congress she served on her fathers council. Then she ran for prime minister in 1966.

Indira Gandhi General info about her life.
Indira Gandhi was the first female prime minister of India and of any country with a prime minister serving fifteen years From 1966-1977 consecutively and 1980-1984 when she was assassination.
She joined in with the Independence of India. She was born in the Nehru Dynasty. In 1940 she had a chronic lung disease she went to Switzerland to cover.
